Thank goodness for the increasing openness in regard to this difficult illness. The problems and struggle for anyone suffering from depression play out in everyone’s lives that touch the sufferers’ life. Medication and counselling have long been the recommended treatment regime.  The sources, impact and consequences of the illness of depression are helped significantly by a counselling relationship.

Regular measurements and assessments are valuable guides as to the changes taking place, and sometimes this simple, self reported improvement offers reassurance and hope. Suffering is not something any of us chooses to prolong and help is a phone call away, for you, your staff and/or your loved ones.

Bullying, has recently emerged as a significant contributor to depression. Historical bullying may have begun in school, and continued throughout teenage years. The new text, you-tube bullying media are adding a whole new dimension to this brutal, destructive and sometimes deadly form of harassment.

Many people with depression feel guilty or inadequate that they feel bad, they often blame themselves or try to pretend that everything is OK and struggle on. Whatever the cause depression is not the sufferer’s fault. It is important to be supportive, understanding and to offer help to ensure that the problem does not compound itself by continuing untreated.

People with depression often find it difficult to express their feelings and/or needs. This can make those around them feel powerless and inadequate. The sad reality is that for the depressed person they may only ‘feel’ numb, and therefore be unable to articulate their needs or feelings clearly, if at all.

The combination of medical intervention and counselling assists the majority of sufferers to recover.
